About This Sacred Site
The Chinhoyi Caves (Chirorodziva — 'pool of the fallen') are a system of limestone caves in Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe. The caves contain a stunning deep blue pool known as the 'Sleeping Pool' or 'Wonder Hole,' which has been sacred to the local Shona people for centuries. According to oral tradition, the caves served as a refuge and a place of sacrifice and spiritual communication.
