🌊 Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua)
New Zealand
About This Sacred Site
Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua — 'the leaping place of the spirits') is the spiritual landmark at the tip of New Zealand's North Island where, in Māori belief, the spirits of the recently deceased travel down the roots of an ancient pōhutukawa tree into the ocean to return to Hawaiki, the ancestral Polynesian homeland. The cape marks the meeting point of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and visitors can see the clash of currents. The site is deeply tapu (sacred) to Māori.
