About This Sacred Site
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus in Vilnius is the most important Catholic church in Lithuania. Its neoclassical facade, designed by Laurynas Gucevičius in the late 18th century, dominates Cathedral Square at the heart of the capital. The cathedral stands on the site of a pagan temple where Lithuania's last pagan king, Mindaugas, was baptized in 1251. The Chapel of St. Casimir houses the silver sarcophagus of Lithuania's patron saint.
