About This Sacred Site
Studenica Monastery, founded in 1190 by Grand Župan Stefan Nemanja, is the largest and richest of Serbia's medieval monasteries and the spiritual heart of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Set in a forested valley in central Serbia, the monastery's two principal churches are built of white marble. The Church of the Virgin contains 13th-century frescoes that represent a landmark in Serbian and Byzantine art. Studenica was the mother church of the medieval Serbian state.
