⛪ Sopoćani Monastery
Serbia
About This Sacred Site
Sopoćani Monastery, founded around 1260 by the Serbian king Stefan Uroš I, sits in a remote valley near the source of the Raška River. Although the monastery fell into ruin during Ottoman times and remained roofless for centuries, its 13th-century frescoes survived and are widely regarded as the pinnacle of Serbian medieval art and among the finest examples of Byzantine painting anywhere. The Dormition of the Virgin fresco is especially celebrated for its classical serenity.
