About This Sacred Site
St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) has stood at the center of Vienna since the 12th century and is the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. Its soaring South Tower reaches 136 meters and its distinctive tiled roof — decorated with 230,000 glazed tiles in chevron patterns displaying the Habsburg double eagle — is visible across the city. The cathedral survived Allied bombing in 1945 and was rebuilt with contributions from all of Austria's provinces.
