π Church of St. Nicholas, Demre
Turkey
About This Sacred Site
The Church of St. Nicholas in Demre (ancient Myra) is the burial church of St. Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop whose legendary generosity inspired the figure of Santa Claus. Nicholas was known for secretly giving gifts to the poor, particularly his gift of gold dowries that saved three sisters from destitution. The present church dates primarily from the 8th century and was built over Nicholas's original 6th-century basilica. Though Italian merchants claimed to have taken his relics to Bari in 1087, archaeological investigations in 2017 suggested that remains may still lie beneath the church floor.
