🏛️ Göbekli Tepe
Turkey
About This Sacred Site
Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey is the oldest known monumental religious structure in the world, dating back approximately 12,000 years — roughly 6,000 years before Stonehenge and 7,000 years before the Great Pyramid. Its massive T-shaped pillars, some weighing up to 10 tons and decorated with animal carvings, were erected by hunter-gatherers before the invention of agriculture. This discovery revolutionized our understanding of human civilization, suggesting that organized religion may have driven the development of agriculture rather than the other way around.
