About This Sacred Site

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is one of the most remarkable buildings in human history. Built as a Byzantine cathedral in 537 CE by Emperor Justinian I, it was the world's largest cathedral for nearly 1,000 years. After the Ottoman conquest in 1453, it was converted to a mosque, and in 1934 it became a museum. In 2020, it was reconverted to a mosque. Its massive dome, stunning mosaics, and blend of Christian and Islamic elements make it a unique symbol of civilizational dialogue.
