About This Sacred Site
Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur is one of the most important archaeological sites in Bangladesh and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 8th century by Dharmapala, the second Pala emperor, it was one of the largest Buddhist monasteries south of the Himalayas. The massive complex covers 27 acres and includes a central cruciform temple surrounded by 177 monastic cells. It was a major center of Buddhist learning that influenced Buddhist architecture across Southeast Asia, from Myanmar to Java.
