The Sixty Dome Mosque (Shat Gombuj Masjid) in Bagerhat is the largest and most impressive mosque from the Sultanate period in Bangladesh and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Turkish general and saint Khan Jahan Ali in the 15th century, the mosque actually has 77 domes and is part of a larger mosque city that includes numerous other mosques, mausoleums, and tanks. Khan Jahan Ali is revered as a saint who brought Islam and civilization to the swampy Sundarbans region.
