The Dhakeshwari Temple is the most important Hindu temple in Bangladesh and is often called the national temple. Dedicated to the goddess Dhakeshwari ('Goddess of Dhaka'), who is considered the city's protector, the temple dates to at least the 12th century. The complex includes a main temple, smaller shrines, and a Shiva lingam. Despite Bangladesh being predominantly Muslim, the temple is protected as a national heritage site and serves as the center of Hindu worship and festivals, particularly Durga Puja, for the country's Hindu minority.
