Established circa 1217 during the reign of Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II, Rozhen Monastery is the largest monastic complex in the Pirin Mountains region, situated near the village of Melnik. The original 12th-century foundation experienced significant rebuilding in the 16th century under Ottoman rule, notably between 1597 and 1601, when master builders from the Samokov school contributed to the church's frescoes and architectural elements. The main Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary features a cross-domed design typical of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Rozhen was a cultural and spiritual center, surviving multiple Ottoman suppressions and serving as a refuge during the Bulgarian National Revival period. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary housed here dates back to the 13th century and has been credited with numerous healings, enhancing the site's prominence. After damage during the Balkan Wars, restoration efforts were undertaken in the 20th century, including in 1937 and post-World War II, preserving its frescoes and monastic buildings.
