About This Sacred Site
Roskilde Cathedral, built in the 12th and 13th centuries, was Scandinavia's first Gothic cathedral constructed in brick and set the standard for the Brick Gothic style across northern Europe. Located about 30 km west of Copenhagen, it has served as the burial church of the Danish royal family since the 15th century, with 39 kings and queens interred in elaborate chapels and sarcophagi. It was one of the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995.
