🪨 Jelling Stones and Church
Denmark
About This Sacred Site
The Jelling Stones in central Jutland are two massive runic stones raised by Viking-age kings in the 10th century, flanked by two large burial mounds and a Romanesque church. The larger stone, raised by King Harald Bluetooth around 965, is often called 'Denmark's birth certificate' — it proclaims Harald's conquest of Denmark and Norway and his conversion of the Danes to Christianity. One face bears the oldest known depiction of Christ in Scandinavia.
