About This Sacred Site
The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising over 400 limestone islands surrounded by turquoise lagoon waters. Beyond their natural beauty, the Rock Islands contain numerous sacred sites including ancient burial caves, village ruins, and ceremonial platforms. Palauan tradition holds that many of the islands are inhabited by spirits, and certain caves and rock formations are considered taboo. The Rock Islands have been central to Palauan spiritual life for thousands of years.
