⛪ Regina Mundi Church (Soweto)
South Africa
About This Sacred Site
Regina Mundi Church in Soweto is the largest Catholic church in South Africa and was a sanctuary for anti-apartheid activists. During the 1976 Soweto Uprising, students fled into the church to escape police gunfire, and bullet holes still mark its walls. Known as 'the people's church,' Regina Mundi hosted political meetings, funerals of activists, and served as a spiritual refuge during the darkest years of apartheid. It remains a powerful symbol of faith, resistance, and reconciliation.
