Liberia
About This Sacred Site
Providence Baptist Church in Monrovia is the oldest church in Liberia, founded in 1821 by freed African American slaves who established the colony that would become Liberia. The church was the spiritual center of the Americo-Liberian settlers and played a central role in the founding of the Liberian state. The original building, on Providence Island where the settlers first landed, was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Providence Baptist Church represents the deeply intertwined nature of Christianity and Liberian national identity, and it continues to be one of the most historically significant houses of worship in West Africa.
