🏜️ Ounianga Lakes
Chad
About This Sacred Site
The Lakes of Ounianga are a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising 18 interconnected lakes in the hyperarid Sahara Desert of northeastern Chad. These extraordinary bodies of water, surviving in one of the driest places on Earth, are considered sacred by the Teda (Tubu) people who have lived in the region for millennia. The largest lake, Yoan, covers over 350 hectares with deep blue water. The lakes are fed by ancient underground aquifers and have been revered as gifts from the divine. Their miraculous existence in the barren Sahara lends them a profound spiritual quality.
