Nidaros Cathedral (Trondheim)

About This Sacred Site

Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim is the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and Norway's most important church. Built over the burial site of King Olav II (St. Olav), who fell at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030 and was later canonized, the cathedral has been the traditional coronation church of Norwegian kings. The present Gothic structure dates mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, and the St. Olav pilgrim route to Trondheim has been revived as Scandinavia's Santiago.
