⛪ Arctic Cathedral (Tromsø)
Norway
About This Sacred Site
The Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen) in Tromsø is a striking modernist church designed by architect Jan Inge Hovig and completed in 1965. Its dramatic triangular profile of precast concrete panels was designed to evoke Arctic ice, icebergs, and the Northern Lights. The enormous stained-glass window on the east wall, created by artist Victor Sparre, is one of the largest in Europe. Though technically a parish church rather than a cathedral, it has become the most iconic landmark of northern Norway.
