Masjid Zahir in Alor Setar is the state mosque of Kedah and one of the grandest and oldest mosques in Malaysia. Built in 1912, its Moorish architectural style with five large domes representing the five pillars of Islam has made it one of the most beautiful mosques in Southeast Asia. The mosque also serves as a memorial to Kedah warriors who died resisting the Siamese invasion in 1821. It is a prominent symbol of Malay-Islamic heritage and a gathering point for major Islamic celebrations in the state.
