Kek Lok Si Temple (Temple of Supreme Bliss) in Air Itam, Penang, is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and one of the most important in Southeast Asia. Construction began in 1890 and has continued with additions over the decades. The temple features a seven-story pagoda combining Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles, symbolizing the unity of Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. A 36.5-meter bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) watches over the complex. During Chinese New Year, the temple is illuminated with thousands of lights.
