About This Sacred Site
Batu Caves is a limestone hill containing a series of caves and cave temples north of Kuala Lumpur. It is the most important Hindu shrine in Malaysia and one of the most important outside of India, dedicated to Lord Murugan (Subrahmanya). The massive 42.7-meter golden statue of Lord Murugan at the base of the 272 steps is the tallest Murugan statue in the world. The annual Thaipusam festival draws over 1.5 million devotees who undertake acts of devotion including carrying kavadi (physical burdens) up the steps.
