⛪ Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary (Mariazell)
Austria
About This Sacred Site
The Basilica of Mariazell, located in the Styrian Alps, is the most important pilgrimage site in Austria and one of the most visited Marian shrines in Europe. Founded in 1157 when a Benedictine monk placed a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in a cell (Zell), the original Romanesque church grew into a grand Baroque basilica. Pope John Paul II visited in 1983 and called Mariazell the 'heart of Austria.' Pilgrims from across Central Europe flock here to venerate the Magna Mater Austriae.
