About This Sacred Site
The Makapan Valley in Limpopo Province is part of the UNESCO Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa (the 'Cradle of Humankind' extension). The Cave of Hearths within the valley contains evidence of human habitation spanning over 3 million years, including some of the earliest evidence of controlled fire use. The valley is sacred to the local Ndebele communities and is also the site of the Siege of Makapan's Cave (1854), a tragic event that holds deep cultural and spiritual significance.
