About This Sacred Site
The Kalon Minaret in Bukhara, standing 48 meters tall, was built in 1127 CE and is one of the most iconic monuments of Central Asian Islam. According to legend, Genghis Khan was so impressed by the minaret that he ordered it spared when he destroyed Bukhara in 1220. The adjacent Kalon Mosque, rebuilt in the 16th century, can accommodate 12,000 worshippers. Together with the Mir-i Arab Madrasa opposite, the Poi-Kalon complex forms one of the most magnificent architectural ensembles in the Islamic world.
