About This Sacred Site
Jogyesa Temple is the chief temple of the Jogye Order, the largest Buddhist denomination in South Korea, located in central Seoul. Founded in 1395, the temple serves as the administrative headquarters of Korean Buddhism. It is especially spectacular during Buddha's Birthday celebrations in May, when thousands of colorful lotus lanterns are hung across the grounds and surrounding streets in one of Seoul's most beloved festivals. Despite its busy urban location the temple provides a peaceful oasis for meditation and worship.
