Heiligenkreuz Abbey (Abbey of the Holy Cross), founded in 1133 in the Vienna Woods, is the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world. The abbey is named for a relic of the True Cross given to it by Leopold V. Its monks maintain the traditional Latin Gregorian chant β their 2008 album Chant: Music for Paradise became a surprise international bestseller. The complex blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture across nearly 900 years of continuous use.
