About This Sacred Site
The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, Istria, is a 6th-century episcopal complex that ranks among the finest surviving examples of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean. Built by Bishop Euphrasius around 553, the basilica's apse is adorned with gold-ground mosaics depicting the Virgin enthroned, saints, and the donor bishop — comparable in quality to the famous mosaics of Ravenna.
