Esztergom Basilica (the Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed Into Heaven and St. Adalbert) is the largest church in Hungary and the seat of the Catholic Primate. Situated on Castle Hill overlooking the Danube, the neoclassical basilica was built between 1822 and 1869 on the site where Hungary's first king, St. Stephen, was born and crowned in the year 1000. Its altarpiece, painted by Girolamo Michelangelo Grigoletti, is one of the world's largest paintings on a single canvas.
