⛪ Pannonhalma Archabbey
Hungary
About This Sacred Site
Pannonhalma Archabbey, founded in 996 by Benedictine monks at the invitation of Prince Géza, is one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary. Perched on St. Martin's Hill in western Hungary, the abbey was where the first Hungarian school was established and where the earliest known document in Hungarian — the founding charter of Tihany Abbey (1055) — was kept. The complex includes a basilica, cloisters, a library of 360,000 volumes, and a working vineyard and lavender field.
