The El Ghriba Synagogue on the island of Djerba in southern Tunisia is one of the oldest synagogues in the world, with traditions claiming its foundation shortly after the destruction of Solomon's Temple in 586 BCE. According to legend, the synagogue contains a door or stone from the original Temple in Jerusalem. It is the center of an annual Jewish pilgrimage, the Lag BaOmer festival, which draws Jewish pilgrims from across North Africa and Europe to this day.
