Mali
About This Sacred Site
The Cliff of Bandiagara, a massive sandstone escarpment stretching 150 km across the Dogon Country of central Mali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most important spiritual landscapes. The Dogon people, who have lived along the cliff for centuries, maintain an elaborate cosmological system, mask traditions, and ritual ceremonies. Their villages cling to the cliff face and contain sacred shrines (toguna), granaries, and ancestral altars. The Dogon's complex astronomical and spiritual knowledge has attracted global interest.
