History & Origins

Bongeunsa was founded in 794 CE by the Silla-dynasty monk Yeonhoe, originally named Gyeonseongsa. In the 15th century, during the Joseon dynasty’s suppression of Buddhism in favor of Confucianism, the temple was renamed Bongeunsa and took on a role as a center for the preservation of Buddhist scriptures and teachings during a period when the religion faced official hostility. Joseon-era monks carved over 3,000 woodblock sutras here, creating a library of Buddhist texts that helped the tradition survive centuries of marginalization. The temple was severely damaged during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 (Imjin War) and again during the Korean War (1950-1953), but was rebuilt each time by devoted communities. Visitor Guide

Bongeunsa Temple is directly across from COEX Mall in the Gangnam district, reachable from Bongeunsa Station (Seoul Metro Line 9, Exit 1) in a two-minute walk. The temple is open daily from approximately 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and there is no entrance fee. Remove shoes before entering any prayer hall. Photography is permitted on the grounds and of the Maitreya statue, but restricted during ceremonies and inside active worship spaces. The temple-stay program (one-night or day-only options) should be booked in advance through the Korean Temple Stay website (eng.templestay.com); programs include meals and meditation instruction and cost approximately 50,000 to 70,000 KRW. Evening visits can be especially atmospheric, as the lanterns along the paths illuminate the temple while the Gangnam skyline glitters overhead. The temple tea house serves traditional teas in a garden setting and is a pleasant rest stop.
