π Bobo-Dioulasso Grand Mosque
Burkina Faso
About This Sacred Site
The Grand Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso is one of the finest examples of Sudanese mud-brick architecture in West Africa. Built in 1893, the mosque features the characteristic cone-shaped towers and protruding wooden beams (toron) that define the Sudanese architectural style. The mosque serves as the spiritual center for the predominantly Muslim population of Burkina Faso's second-largest city. Like the Great Mosque of DjennΓ© in Mali, it requires regular community maintenance, with the replastering of the mud exterior serving as both practical upkeep and communal spiritual expression.
