🕌 Bobo-Dioulasso Grand Mosque
Burkina Faso
About This Sacred Site
The Grand Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso is one of the finest examples of Sudanese mud-brick architecture in West Africa. Built in 1893, the mosque features the characteristic cone-shaped towers and protruding wooden beams (toron) that define the Sudanese architectural style. The mosque serves as the spiritual center for the predominantly Muslim population of Burkina Faso's second-largest city. Like the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali, it requires regular community maintenance, with the replastering of the mud exterior serving as both practical upkeep and communal spiritual expression.
