🏔️ Bachkovo Monastery
Bulgaria
About This Sacred Site
Bachkovo Monastery is the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria, nestled in the Rhodope Mountains along the Chepelare River. Founded in 1083 by two Georgian brothers who served as military commanders under the Byzantine Empire, it uniquely blends Georgian, Byzantine, and Bulgarian artistic traditions. The monastery's most prized treasure is the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary Eleusa, which draws tens of thousands of pilgrims, especially during the Assumption feast in August. The refectory contains remarkable 17th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes and the Last Judgment.
