About This Sacred Site
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral on Toompea Hill in Tallinn's old town, built between 1894 and 1900 during the period of Russian Imperial rule over Estonia. Designed in the Russian Revival style by Mikhail Preobrazhensky, the cathedral features five onion domes, an ornate mosaic facade, and an interior richly decorated with icons and mosaics. Its 15 bells include the largest bell ensemble in Tallinn. The cathedral was controversially built as a symbol of Russian imperial power.
