βͺ Pirita Convent Ruins
Estonia
About This Sacred Site
The Pirita Convent (St. Bridget's Convent) was a Bridgettine monastery founded in 1407 on the banks of the Pirita River near Tallinn. The convent church was the largest medieval building in Tallinn before it was destroyed during the Livonian War in 1577 by Ivan the Terrible's forces. The roofless limestone ruins β especially the soaring 35-meter gable wall β have become one of Tallinn's most atmospheric historic sites. A new Bridgettine convent was established adjacent to the ruins in 2001.
