⛪ Wooden Churches of Maramureș
Romania
About This Sacred Site
The Wooden Churches of Maramureș in northwestern Romania are a collection of Orthodox churches built of timber using traditional techniques passed down over centuries. Their soaring Gothic-style spires — some exceeding 50 meters — are unique to the region and reflect a time when Orthodox communities were forbidden from building in stone. Eight of these churches are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, and feature rich interior paintings.
