About This Sacred Site
The Virunga Mountains in eastern DRC form part of Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The chain of eight volcanoes, including the active Nyiragongo with its spectacular lava lake, holds deep spiritual significance for surrounding communities. Local Bantu and Batwa peoples have long regarded the mountains as abodes of ancestral spirits, and the mountain gorillas that inhabit the dense forests are considered spiritually significant beings. Despite decades of conflict in the region, traditional reverence for the mountains has contributed to conservation of this irreplaceable ecosystem.
