About This Sacred Site
Tundavala is a dramatic escarpment near Lubango in southwestern Angola, where the Huíla Plateau drops nearly 1,000 meters to the coastal lowlands. The site is revered by the Nyaneka-Humbe and other local peoples as a place of spiritual power, where the spirits of ancestors dwell in the clouds that frequently swirl around the cliff edge. Traditional ceremonies are performed at the escarpment during important community events. The breathtaking views across the lowlands to the distant Atlantic coast and the ever-changing weather patterns at the cliff edge create a genuinely awe-inspiring atmosphere.
