The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiyev Posad is the most important Russian Orthodox monastery and the spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Founded in 1337 by one of Russia's most venerated saints, Sergius of Radonezh, the monastery grew into a fortified complex of cathedrals, churches, and monastic buildings. It has served as a pilgrimage destination for centuries and houses the relics of St. Sergius.
