βͺ Assumption Cathedral (Vladimir)
Russia
About This Sacred Site
The Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir, built in 1158β1160 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, served as the mother church of medieval Russia before Moscow's rise to prominence. The white-limestone cathedral set the standard for Russian ecclesiastical architecture, and the Moscow Kremlin's own Assumption Cathedral was modeled after it. Inside, surviving frescoes by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chorny (painted in 1408) rank among Russia's greatest art treasures.
