π Church of Panagia Evangelistria, Tinos
Greece
About This Sacred Site
The Church of Panagia Evangelistria (Our Lady of the Annunciation) on the island of Tinos is the most important Marian pilgrimage site in Greece. In 1823, a nun named Pelagia had visions of the Virgin Mary revealing the location of a buried miraculous icon. The icon of the Annunciation was unearthed and a grand church was built to house it. Today, pilgrims crawl on their knees up the long carpeted street from the harbor to the church, especially during the feast of the Assumption on August 15, Greece's most important religious holiday.
