Temppeliaukio Church (the Rock Church) in Helsinki was quarried directly into solid bedrock and opened in 1969. Designed by architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, the circular church is topped by a copper-lined dome supported by a ring of skylights that flood the rough rock walls with natural light. The exposed granite walls provide remarkable acoustics, making it a popular venue for concerts. It is one of Helsinki's most visited attractions and a masterpiece of modern Finnish architecture.
