About This Sacred Site
Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) in central Sri Lanka is a 2,243-meter mountain sacred to four religions. At its summit is a footprint-shaped depression in rock, which Buddhists believe is Buddha's footprint, Hindus attribute to Shiva, Muslims and Christians believe is Adam's first step after being expelled from Eden. The pilgrimage season from December to May sees thousands climbing the 5,500 steps through the night to reach the summit for sunrise, accompanied by ringing bells.
