About This Sacred Site
Skellig Michael (Sceilig Mhichíl) is a dramatic rocky island rising 218 meters from the Atlantic Ocean, 12 kilometers off the coast of County Kerry. Between the 6th and 12th centuries, a small community of monks lived in beehive-shaped stone huts (clochán) perched near the summit, accessible only by climbing 600 ancient stone steps. The monastery's extreme isolation and remarkably preserved stone structures make it one of Europe's most evocative early Christian sites.
