About This Sacred Site
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is a pilgrimage town in the Camargue region of Provence where, according to tradition, a boat carrying Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, Mary Jacobé, and other early Christians arrived from the Holy Land after the crucifixion of Jesus. The fortified Romanesque church houses the relics of Saints Mary Jacobé and Mary Salome in the upper chapel. The town is also sacred to the Romani people, who venerate their patron saint Sara-la-Kali in the crypt. Each May, thousands of Romani pilgrims gather for a colorful procession carrying Sara's statue into the sea.
