About This Sacred Site
The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre stands at the highest point in Paris, its white travertine stone gleaming above the city skyline. Built between 1875 and 1914 as an act of national penance after the Franco-Prussian War, the basilica is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has continued uninterrupted here since 1885. The massive mosaic in the apse, one of the largest in the world, depicts Christ with outstretched arms.
